2020.07 How do we Awaken?
For this reason it says, “Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you.” Ephesians 5:14
When did we fall asleep? When did we become more enamored with glamour, fashion, new toys, and entertaining ourselves than looking out for others? Was it when nearly every household either had a personal computer or at the very least access to one? Was it the commonality of the laptop or the tablet or the smart phone?
When did we forget there are people in our cities that are hurting, lonely or worse – missing? Was it when we determined that unborn babies and the elderly, our most fragile citizens, weren’t valuable or were disposable? When did we stop noticing that there is human slavery and trafficking in the world or that it actually occurs in our own backyards? Was it when sex became just a sport and women began to accept their role as objects and treat themselves that way? Is it when we turned our backs on pornography as just a fact of life that enters our households, hotel rooms, and handhelds…just a matter of taste and not a moral issue?
What will you and I do about the rights of suffering humans? When did we find ourselves getting our adrenaline boost and arousal from being egged on by the social media accusers and influencers instead of countering them with love?
Do we feel we don’t matter or just can’t? Is one person making an effort just too overwhelming? What if we fail? What if our efforts are blocked? What if we comprehended that trafficking was a $150 billion per year business and that millions are trafficked all over the year? What if we knew the people who facilitated these things and stood to gain were people we thought we could trust? Would we feel betrayed? Was it easier to just fall asleep into our own digital worlds or focus on careers or ambitions or just coping to live?
What would we do if we discovered that our own captivity was closer than we thought? Would we be humble enough to recognize that we had a lot of things wrong because we were sold a really bad bill of goods? What if our deliverers are the very ones who have been made to be targets revile, unfair accusations and scorn, but they rescued us anyway?
Isn’t that just like Jesus?
Change is afoot.
Watch. Wait. Question. Awaken!
Yawning as my eyes open wide,
Kiki
